What are Internships? Are they different from a summer job?
- Internships tend to be project oriented - not simply task oriented
- Internships are often related to a field and may earn academic credit
- Internships are more often goal oriented toward a career path
What are the benefits? Can an Internship help develop a career path?
- Exploration - is what you want to do a good fit?
- Training - Provides an opportunity to develop skills
- Experience - Allows you to gain tangible experience, allows you to demonstrate transferable skills and give you career-related experiences for the resume
- Contacts - Meet and work with people who can suggest future directions and make referrals other opportunities and employers.
How do I choose what to do?
- Be self-aware of interests, values, skills and goals
- Be aware of what you want in an employer:
- Geographic location
- Type of organization: for profit, non-profit, government
- Size of organization
- Type of position and compensation
How do I broaden my search?
- Set priorities
- Develop several plans, "A", "B" and even "C"
- Be willing to relocate. Opens a wider range of options
- Consider alternative forms of compensation: academic credit, experience, references, introductions, etc.
