Cascadia Student Named to All-Washington Academic Team
Bothell, WA - Cascadia Community College is proud to announce student
Loraine Spargo has been named to the 2008 All-Washington Academic Team. The
Bothell resident is one of 55 community and technical college students across
the state to earn the honor, which recognizes students who are outstanding in
the classroom and in their community. In connection with the recognition, she
will receive a check for $750 and is eligible to receive a scholarship of up to
$7,000 from many of the state’s top public and private universities and
colleges.
Loraine Spargo is not only an outstanding student, but a mother and
grandmother as well. Her Cascadia experience began as she was on the road
to recovery following a traumatic brain injury. Therapists helped her
regain mental functions which were once simple: like reading and adding simple
numbers. After three years of therapy, Loraine then turned to Cascadia’s
faculty for help preparing for college. With persistence and several basic
math courses under her belt, she began to work towards her degree. In
addition to her studies, Loraine held a part-time job at the college, and
participated in leadership and volunteer opportunities at Cascadia, all while
maintaining a 3.86 grade point average. Loraine intends to continue her
studies at a four-year university, to pursue a Ph.D. in English.
“I want to congratulate Loraine on her outstanding achievement,” said Dr. Bill
Christopher, Cascadia Community College President. “Seeing students reach
their full potential is the ultimate reward for the work we do as educators.”
Loraine Spargo was honored for her achievement, during a ceremony Thursday,
March 20th at South Puget Sound Community College.
